Govt mulls possible temporary closure of restaurants, bars

Prime Minister Sanna Marin on Saturday expressed concern over the deteriorating coronavirus situation and said that the situation may lead the government to close down the restaurants and bars across the country temporarily.

Talking to the national broadcaster Yle in its Ykkösaamu (Morning Breakfast) programme, the Premier, however, said that the upcoming county elections scheduled for January 23 will be held accordingly.

Last year the government shifted the municipal elections across the country to June from the original schedule of April against the backdrop of the worsening coronavirus situation.

The coronavirus ministerial working group on Friday night decided to extend the ongoing restrictive measures until the end of January, although the group decided to resume classes at the schools on Monday after Christmas vacation.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health proposed the government to re-introduce remote learning at the schools during the spring and minister Krista Kiuru strongly supported the proposal but Education Minister Li Andersson and Finance Minister Annika Saarikko opposed the proposal.

Terming the coronavirus variant Omicron as very worrying, Marin said that special attention must be paid to the capacity of country´s healthcare system to deal with the situation.

The Prime Minister said that the government has taken stricter measures to arrest the spread of coronavirus outbreak.

She said the government will consider to close down restaurants and bars completely for a temporary period, if the measures are not enough.

Earlier, the government closed down the restaurants and bars in the country in the spring, 2020 and again March 2021 following the worsening coronavirus situation.

Currently bars and restaurants remain opened for a limited time following some restrictive measures.
